"Fortune Favours the Brave": Wire, NYC, March 2020

"Fortune favours the brave," Wire bassist/co-vocalist Graham Lewis promised the virus-wary audience in NYC's Music Hall of Williamsburg, March 11, 2020, days before the city would formally go into lockdown for COVID-19. Indeed this would be the last live show I'd see for what looks like quite awhile. How apropo it would be Wire.

Amanda pointed out that this English band was post-punk pretty much from the beginning of punk rock itself -- their first album was 1977's obtuse yet succinct "Pink Flag." Their angsty-noise pop has been the vital connective tissue to later bands like Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, Dandy Warhols, Oasis.
